BULLETIN FOR MEETING OF 3/18/10
Well, this afternoon started out no different than any other. Seems everyone recovered from their St. Patrick’s Day partying enough to show up for 11:30 club. Some were even seen still wearing their green from yesterday…
After TED and KATIE handled the Invocation and Pledge with aplomb, LOU opened the meeting with a sobering announcement. PAUL READ’s wife, Betty, is in the hospital with a heart infection. That’s not good. Those of you holding any extra markers with the Man Upstairs should cash a few of them in now for Betty.
PAUL CHEN, STEVE VARVIS and NICK SMALDINO brought guests (does Kim count as a guest??), including 4 Rotaract students who took orders for Easter Candy to raise funds.
Travelers included TOM COLEMAN, who went to Monterey and brought back some nuts—well, there seems to be some question as to whether he brought them back or got some from his own closet—4 way test?? He wasn’t fined….hmmmm
Then there was DAVE REULAND, who apparently went to Tahoe simply to get back the $100 CHIP PUTNAM managed to lose there…he had to ring the bell….double hmmmmm….
The birthday table was replete with Rotarians who were asked to name their favorite green things. Can you match the following answers with the appropriate Rotarian? Using your #2 pencil, draw a line from the column in the left to the matching answer on the right:
SHANNON STINER Green Beer
DON HENDERSON #14th hole at Ft. Washington
GORDON KNOTT Cash
TED MARSELLA Midori
RON DUSTIN Cash
JOE MASTRO Spinach
DICK ELLSWORTH Swiss-Irish wife
Announcements:
Seems the Wine Trip was changed again; this time it’s June 5. If NICK SMALDINO would stop taking bribes and special requests from his friends, we might actually get a date tied down….once again, I find myself saying “hmmmmmm….”
PAUL DYER is looking for Dust-Bowl enthusiasts to attend Roger Rocka’s production of “Oklahoma!” April 24. Tickets are $55 each, and include dinner. This promises to be great evening of entertainment and Rotary fellowship. See PAUL for more info.
KEVIN OFLAZIAN is looking for housing for the GSE Team from Brazil, who will be in Fresno the week of 5/16. They will speak at our venerable club on 5/20. If you can spare a room or two, or would be willing to give them a tour of your business, please contact Kevin.
Rotarian of the day:
Our very own Honorable DAVE KALEMKARIAN (NOT kal-em-A-kar-ian), was singled out for further inspection. Seems he is 47, Fresno born, raised and educated, and before entering the legal field, our Judge began as a CPA. Apparently that was too exciting for him, so he switched to something more mundane. He has three adorable children and a lovely wife, Shawn. First job: Fry Guy at Burger King. Favorite thing in Rotary: Organizing Sports Day at the shooting range….DUCK!….oh well, thanks CHIP, for sponsoring such a smart dresser—I mean great Rotarian!
Raffle Winner:
DICK ELLSWORTH. No moolah, just a bottle of wine.
Our Speakers:
Shirley Bruegman and John Dunn from the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute at CSUF.
Funded in part by the Bernard Osher Foundation, The OSHER Institute is designed for adults age 50+ who wish to continue learning and exploring for the sheer joy of it.
The program offers a rich array of workshops, short courses and field trips of particular interest to retired or semi-retired adults. Some of their trips are even overseas! There are no exams, registrations, or entrance requirements, and the fees to register and attend classes are minimal. Programs are interactive, challenging and feature some of the most knowledgeable educators/speakers in their field.
The Institute’s philosophy is “Stay Mentally Active.” Hey, did you know that adult brains CAN grow new brain cells? Apparently there is still hope for some of you old college partyers… but you need to take that old brain out for some exercise, and what better way than the programs offered at the OSHER Institute? Word on the street is TERRY and Marsha Huntsman attend regularly – add dinner afterwards, and you have all the makings for a date night complete with some great material to ensure a stimulating conversation!
Classes are generally held in the late afternoon, and best of all, parking on campus is FREE!
What impressed me most is the caliber of course offerings. A great way to keep your brain engaged in the community and world around you.
Some of us “younger” Rotarians are glad to have something like this to look forward to!

Next week’s program:
I really have no idea, but why don’t you come and be surprised?
Signing off,
No Mercy McHenry
