The San Joaquin River has served as the major source of construction aggregates for the past 60 years. The leftover mining pits along the river are sometimes "captured" during high river flows, connecting them with the main channel and creating problems for both humans and fish. The Department of Water Resources recently repaired a breach along the channel and will detail the project and the results of the repair.

The completed project has multiple benefits, including isolating the gravel pit from the main channel, creating 4.5 acres of floodplain habitat, and rebuilding a road that connects two properties owned by the San Joaquin River Conservancy in Madera County.

Senior Engineer Dave Encinas will describe the project construction methods and its performance since completion in early 2018.
