Who's going to ensure local government serves us well? Most of us aren't closely involved in governance of the county, cities, schools or special districts and local news media are more interested in entertainment, eating out and crime, Fresno County's Civil Grand Jury -- 19 citizens volunteering a year of service -- helps ensure a good return on our tax dollars by shining a light on the good and not-so-good and offering reasonable recommendations for correcting challenges.

The Superior Court is accepting applications for the 2020-2021 Fresno County Civil Grand Jury. If you're 18, a resident of the county at least one year by July 1, of good character and interested enough in good local government to invest substantial time in public service for a year, you're eligible. You'll investigate citizen complaints about government entities, visit the county's only state prison, collaborate with 18 other accomplished and curious people and publish your findings and recommendations.

Former journalist Lanny Larson is in his third year of grand jury service and shares why he believes being a grand juror is a great way to serve the community.
